A service career reads as a list of place names. Each one, in practice, was a different problem handed over on a particular morning. This is that sequence, given in the periods the public record supports.
Point of entry
The service begins with an allotment, not an ambition.
An officer of the Indian Police Service does not choose a state. They are allotted one, and it becomes the map of their working life. For Sanjay Kharat, appointed with the 2014 batch, that map is Gujarat: a coastline, an industrial belt, a metropolis, tribal uplands and a long international frontier, all policed under one cadre.
What follows is the ground he has been given to hold, in order.

Appointed to the Indian Police Service
The appointment that begins everything else. Allotment to the Gujarat cadre with the 2014 batch places an officer under a single state's police establishment for the length of a career — its districts, its ranges, its specialist wings and its commissionerates.

The first territorial charge
Sub-divisional charge at Keshod, in Junagadh district on the Saurashtra peninsula. An Assistant Superintendent of Police holds police stations, supervises investigations and answers for law and order across the sub-division — a real command, not a rehearsal for one.
This is the posting in which an officer's working method is formed: how quickly a scene is secured, how closely an investigating officer is supervised, whether a complaint at the counter is written down or waved away.

Promotion, and a metropolis to keep moving
In July 2018 he was promoted to the Senior Time Scale and appointed Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic, in Ahmedabad City — the state's largest urban police jurisdiction.
Traffic is where a police force is most visible and most continuously tested. The portfolio runs from signal timing and junction design to enforcement, licensing, accident investigation and the management of processions and public events. It is the branch through which most citizens form their impression of the police, whether or not they ever encounter a crime.

Chapter 04 By 2022 — 2023 Aravalli district · ModasaSuperintendent of Police
District command, at Modasa
The record places him as Superintendent of Police, Aravalli, by January 2022; he held the charge until July 2023, when the district passed to a successor.
An SP's district is a complete police establishment in miniature: stations and outposts, crime and investigation, law and order, an armed reserve, recruitment, internal discipline and the standing obligation to answer the public. It is the office around which the entire service is designed, and the one against which an officer is most closely measured.

From territory to the transaction trail
In July 2023 he moved from district charge to a specialist post: Superintendent of Police, Anti-Economic Offences Wing, CID (Crime), at Gandhinagar. He held it until December 2024.
The change of register is considerable. Economic-offence investigation has no scene to cordon and no witness to canvass at the roadside. It advances through bank records, company filings, ledgers and digital trails, across jurisdictions, over years — and it stands or falls on whether that material was lawfully obtained and correctly read.

Chapter 06 2024 — Amreli districtSuperintendent of Police
Back to a district, with the ledger in hand
In December 2024 he was appointed Superintendent of Police, Amreli, returning to territorial command. The Gujarat Police roll of I.P.S. officers records him in that charge as of 31 August 2025.
An officer who arrives at a district having just spent eighteen months inside financial investigation brings something specific with them: a working familiarity with how fraud is structured, how it presents at a police station counter, and what a district's investigating officers need in order to build a case that survives.

Where an official listing or a published notification fixes a month, this chronology gives the month. Where it establishes only that an officer was in post during a period, the period is what appears — "by 2022", not a manufactured day in January.
Gaps between recorded appointments are left as gaps. An unbroken timeline would look tidier and would be less true.
