and the offices.

There is a version of the police profile that reads like a trophy cabinet, and it is almost always the least useful thing written about an officer. It tells you what was won. It tells you nothing about what the job is.

This account takes the opposite approach. The verifiable spine of Sanjay Kharat's service is short and public: an appointment to the Indian Police Service on the Gujarat cadre in 2014, followed by a sequence of postings that can be traced through official police listings and published transfer notifications. Sub-divisional charge at Keshod in Junagadh district. Promotion to the Senior Time Scale, and appointment as Deputy Commissioner of Police for Traffic in Ahmedabad City in 2018. District command as Superintendent of Police in Aravalli, headquartered at Modasa. A specialist posting to the Anti-Economic Offences Wing of the CID (Crime) at Gandhinagar. And, since December 2024, the charge of Amreli district.

That is the record. Everything else on this site is an attempt to describe honestly what such a record contains — the shape of the work, the weight of each office — without inventing a single achievement to fill the space between the entries.

Beginning at the sub-division

An Assistant Superintendent of Police is a young officer handed something real. The sub-division is not a training exercise with a safety net; it is a genuine territorial charge, with police stations reporting into it and a population that does not know or care how recently the officer arrived. Keshod, in Junagadh district, was that charge.

Officers describe this stage as the one that fixes their instincts. It is where you learn how an investigation actually degrades — that evidence is lost in the first hours, not the last; that a station writer's habits shape a case more than any circular; that a complainant turned away at a counter rarely comes back. Whatever an officer becomes later, the sub-division is where the reflexes are set.

The city, and its traffic

In July 2018 came promotion to the Senior Time Scale and a posting that surprises people who imagine police work as crime work alone: Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Ahmedabad City.

Traffic is the largest sustained interaction between a police force and the public it serves. Most citizens will never report a crime; nearly all of them will meet a traffic constable. The portfolio covers junction design and signal timing, enforcement policy, licensing, accident investigation, event and procession management, and the long, thankless project of changing how a city drives. It is administered in a metropolis of millions, in real time, every day. An officer who has run city traffic has been examined on organisation, patience and public temperament in a way that few other postings examine.

District command

By January 2022 the record places him as Superintendent of Police for Aravalli district, at Modasa; he held that charge until July 2023. In December 2024 he was appointed Superintendent of Police, Amreli.

District command is the office the service is built around. An SP holds law and order, crime and investigation, the district's police stations and outposts, its armed reserve, recruitment and internal discipline, and the district's answer to its own citizens. The work is administrative far more often than it is dramatic — but the administration is the protection. A district where transfers are made on merit, where complaints are registered rather than discouraged, and where investigating officers are supervised rather than merely counted, is a district that is genuinely safer. The reverse is also true, and it fails quietly.

Following the money

Between July 2023 and December 2024 the posting changed character entirely: Superintendent of Police, Anti-Economic Offences Wing, CID (Crime), Gandhinagar.

Economic-offence investigation is the quietest and most technical corner of policing. Its victims are frequently many and dispersed; its evidence is documentary, digital and jurisdictionally scattered; its cases are measured in years. There is no scene to secure. There are ledgers, bank records, company filings and transaction trails, and the whole matter turns on whether they were gathered lawfully and read correctly. A specialist wing exists because a district station, however capable, cannot give a case like that the time it requires.

Where a fact could not be verified against an official listing or a published notification, this site does not assert it. There are no invented statistics on these pages, no fabricated commendations, no manufactured quotations and no case studies dressed up as personal accomplishments. Dates are given as periods where the exact day is not on the public record.

That restraint is deliberate. A profile that says less, and can stand behind all of it, is worth more than one that says everything.
